UNEMPLOYMENT fell for the fifth successive month across Liverpool city region despite the ongoing uncertainty about the speed and sustainability of the economic recovery.
Official figures released today showed the number of people claiming jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) fell by 1,628 people to 50,304 last month – the lowest level for 17 months and significantly down from its peak of 58,196 at the start of this year.
The 3.1% drop last month was reflected in falls in the number of claimants in all six local authorities, ranging from a 2.2% improvement in St Helens to 5.9% in Halton.
Halton, which includes Widnes and Runcorn, has a high concentration of logistics and manufacturing firms and was the first authority to see a steep rise in unemployment in autumn 2008.
It is now leading the way on falling JSA figures with a 19% fall since February, while the city region has seen an average improvement of 14%.
Nationally the claimant count also fell for the fifth consecutive month, down 20,800 to 1.46m last month, having reached 1.64m in February.
The wider unemployment figure – which includes people not eligible for jobseeker’s allowance and is measured quarterly – also fell, by 34,000 to 2.47m for the three months to May.
